One of the most popular methods for self improvement is through self talk. Any negative or debilitating thought can be reversed by applying this powerful technique.
Although the inner workings of these thought patterns are rather complex, the process of using self talk to solve them is rather simple. First we’ll look at the conclusion of actual studies that were performed on the problem. Then we’ll explain how self talk can be used as the solution.
This means of improving ones self is based on the fact that all of our belief’s, whether negative or positive, are programed into the neurological pathways of our brain. Most of the time they stem from earlier events that took place in our lives.
Some examples are “I can never seem to find a good job” or “Losing weight has always been a problem for me.” Others that are common are, “I can never seem to hold on to money” and “I’m not smart enough to be able to start a business of my own.”
While stored in the files of our subconscious minds, there are certain times these beliefs are brought to the conscious level. The more this happens, the deeper they are ingrained in our minds and the harder it becomes to change them.
To explain it in easier terms, we can compare it to an actual example like a daily walk across a grassy field from your house to the post office. Let’s say that every time you make that trip you walk the same path. After a few weeks or months you begin to see the actual route you are taking because the grass begins to look trampled. Then after a year or more the grass may even be completely gone.
Even if you change your path, and let the grass grow back, it could take years to recover. If it got to the point where the grass was completely gone, and there was only dirt, it may never become that nice grassy field like it was before. That is, unless you take the appropriate steps to fix it by planting grass seed.
The process of changing the bad thoughts that are in your subconscious mind is similar to that of the grassy field. Although you won’t be planting grass seed, you will be planting new thoughts through the process of self talk.
Now we’ll take a look at the previous examples of negative thoughts and apply the appropriate self talk to change them.
“I can never seem to find a good job” – “I’m a hard worker, there’s a great job out there just waiting for me to find it”
“Losing weight has always been a problem for me” – “Losing weight comes natural for me”
“I can never seem to hold on to money” – “I am good with money, I only buy things I need and save the rest”
“I’m not smart enough to be able start a business of my own” – “I have above average intelligence and the common sense needed to be successful in a business of my own”
Every one of those negative, pessimistic, and debilitating thoughts will eventually be replaced by continually telling your brain what you want it to replace them with.
There are many self improvement experts who have published scores of material on this subject. Some identify it by using other terminology like self suggestion or auto suggestion.
One of the most compressive programs for learning and applying self talk is “The Lifetime Library of Self-Talk CDs”, developed by a gentleman named Dr Shad Helmstetter.
Prior to that, Dr Helmstetter had written several books on the subject. His flagship publication is titled “The Self-Talk Solution.” It was followed by his other books, “What To Say When You Talk To Yourself”, and “Who Are You Really, And What Do You Want?”
Stories of how his programs have changed the thinking of so many individuals, and propelled them to success, is astounding. If you’re unable to acquire the CD’s you can simply read the books and write your own self talk scripts.
Regardless of how you go about implementing it, self talk can be a life changer!
